MODULE 4

In this module, we focused on how to use interactive tools to create assessments that are both effective and engaging for students. We learned how to use platforms like Quizalize, Kahoot, Blooket, and Questionwell, ChatGPT to develop rubrics, quizzes, and exams quickly and creatively. The main idea was to explore how these tools can offer more dynamic and motivating learning experiences. For example, we transformed quizzes into games with Kahoot and Blooket, which made the evaluation process more fun and effective. Additionally, we explored how these tools allow us to obtain precise and personalized results to identify areas where students need more support. The main objective of this module was to learn how to create formative and summative assessments using different technological tools, thus facilitating the creation of tests that are effective but also easy and quick to implement. We also emphasized the importance of including various tools and techniques to keep students motivated and engaged in learning.

 Development

During the module, key concepts learned focused on the creation and application of both formative and summative assessments, with a specific focus on using technological tools to make the assessment process more effective and engaging. Taking into account that formative evaluations help identify areas of improvement in real-time and allow progressive development of skills. In contrast, summative assessments, such as final exams, provide an overview of progress and learning effectiveness. Both are essential: the formative ones adjust the teaching process and the summative ones evaluate the final performance of the students. Implementing them effectively ensures meaningful learning.

We learned how to use platforms like Quizalize and Blooket to create quizzes that not only test knowledge but also foster a fun and dynamic learning experience. We explored how tools like Kahoot! and Quizizz can be used to carry out continuous assessment activities. These tools allow for constant review of learning and provide immediate feedback that helps students identify areas for improvement.

The importance of providing continuous and adaptive feedback during the learning process was highlighted. Formative assessments allow us to adjust our teaching in real time, addressing the specific needs of students and facilitating more personalized learning.

We discussed the importance of careful planning for summative assessments. This includes establishing clear assessment criteria and designing activities that accurately reflect students' knowledge and skills.

The use of artificial intelligence tools, such as ChatGPT, was explored to provide detailed and personalized feedback on assessments. Implementing formative and summative assessments with technological tools challenged and expanded my understanding of English and language teaching. First, the use of tools like Quizalize and Kahoot! for formative assessments changed my vision of what they should be like. I used to think that assessments were mainly traditional exams and static exercises, but now I see how they can be more dynamic and participatory. The immediate feedback these tools offer showed me the importance of giving feedback at the right time, something I should have considered before.

I plan to apply these concepts in my future teaching in several ways. First, I will integrate technological tools into both formative and summative assessments. I will use platforms like Quizalize, Blooket, and Kahoot! to create interactive quizzes that not only make learning more dynamic but also provide immediate feedback to students. This will allow students to identify their areas of improvement in real time and adjust their learning accordingly.

Additionally, I will design assessments that not only measure knowledge but also evaluate the practical application of the content. Summative assessments will be more than traditional exams; they will include projects and presentations that allow students to demonstrate their understanding in creative and practical ways. I will incorporate artificial intelligence to offer detailed and personalized feedback, helping students better understand their strengths and areas for improvement.

 Conclusion and key learnings

The knowledge acquired in this module will influence my teaching method. I have learned to incorporate digital technologies and tools more effectively, which will transform how I present information and how I interact with students. For example, when using platforms like Kahoot! and Quizalize for assessments, I can make learning more dynamic and engaging. These tools allow for quick and detailed feedback, which will help me identify areas of student difficulty and adjust my approach in real time.

One way it will influence my teaching method is the integration of continuous assessments instead of just final exams. By implementing regular formative assessments, I will be able to monitor students' progress more effectively and provide them with additional support when they need it. This will also help me adapt my teaching to address specific areas where students may find difficulty.

As for a specific lesson where I can apply these concepts, I imagine an activity where students must complete a project on a topic in English. In this lesson, I could use a detailed rubric to evaluate both the quality of their presentation and their ability to use financial vocabulary correctly. Additionally, I would incorporate a formative quiz at the beginning to assess their initial understanding of the topic and another at the end to measure how much they have learned during the lesson. Not only will this allow me to track their progress, but it will also give students a clear idea of how they will be assessed and what areas they need to improve.

In conclusion, this module has been instrumental in improving my approach to creating both formative and summative assessments. I have learned how to design exams, quizzes, and rubrics that not only measure students' knowledge effectively but also give them clear guidance about what is expected of them. This ability to create well-structured and specific assessments will allow me to implement more precise and useful teaching methods.

Incorporation of content created with AI

In this module, I learned how to use various tools to create evaluations quickly and creatively. For example, I used Quizalize to create a quiz. This tool allowed me to do it quickly and efficiently, and then I exported it for printing. In addition, Quizalize makes it easier to take short exams in a more practical and fun way with students, as it offers game options and also allows you to export the results in Excel format, which is great because it shows who needs personalized help. Then I exported the same quiz to Kahoot and turned it into a game. It was a great option because it allowed me to create the quiz quickly by simply uploading the spreadsheet. I also exported the quiz to Blooket, which was fascinating because the different games offered different, more meaningful learning for the students.

Then, I learned how to use Questionwell, a tool that allows you to export to Kahoot, Quizizz, Canvas, Blooket, and Quizlet, among many others. This tool surprised me because I could create short exams based on videos with transcripts, and the results were very good. In addition, we can upload texts or PDFs, although some functions are not free. I selected a video, generated some questions, and then exported it to Google Docs with fascinating results. We also explored Twee, a complete tool for creating different types of assessments and dynamic activities. I had the opportunity to create materials with Twee and I loved the results. On the other hand, Quizizz allowed me to creatively create quizzes based on PDFs and also evaluate them in the classroom, which I liked. Finally, I used ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude to create effective rubrics for proper grading. These tools, along with Quick Rubric, helped me create useful rubrics and combine different applications to get great results. Additionally, I learned techniques for creating good prompts that students can use to practice on their own. It is important to educate students to use prompts appropriately and receive effective feedback.

I decided to include this content because I learned how to use innovative tools to design evaluations efficiently and creatively. For example, I used Quizalize to create quick quizzes that I turned into interactive games with Kahoot and Blooket, making the assessments more engaging. I also explored tools like Questionwell and Twee, which allowed me to develop interactive materials and exams. This reflects how I can apply what I have learned to improve the way I assess students. By using these tools, I can offer more varied and dynamic assessments, which will make learning more interesting and effective for my students.

In this module, we discussed the pros and cons of using artificial intelligence (AI) in English language teaching and education in general. We focused on how we should approach AI carefully, considering that it can be both our friend and our foe, depending on its use. AI can be beneficial if used properly for educational purposes, but it can become a problem if we become too dependent on it. We also explore some people's fear of losing originality with the use of AI and the importance of effective use of technology in teaching.

On the other hand, in this module we also studied gamification, which involves more than simply using games; it's about creating a game-like learning experience, with objectives, rewards, and challenges. The difference between game-based learning and using games as teaching tools is also mentioned.

In addition, we also discussed authentic materials, and their advantages and disadvantages were explored because creativity and innovative approaches are essential for using these materials effectively and technology helps us select and adapt these resources according to our needs.

Finally, we learned to use a wide variety of applications and tools powered by artificial intelligence that are fundamental for teaching the English language in its four main skills: speaking, listening, writing, and reading. We became familiar with various resources that not only facilitate teaching and learning but also allow for more dynamic and effective interaction between students and teachers.

At the end of the module, we obtained a particularly fascinating piece of knowledge: creating bots on platforms such as poe.com and Cody. This learning turned out to be very interesting and valuable, as it allowed us to develop a virtual assistant capable of providing specific help to students in various subjects.

Development (Reflection on key concepts)

In this course, I learned several important topics that are changing education today. One of them was how AI can positively and negatively affect our learning. AI can adapt to how each student learns, like a personalized tutor, making school management more efficient and providing quick feedback. However, there are also concerns about the excessive use of AI and its ethical implications, as well as potential over-reliance on machines.

We discussed whether AI is a friend or foe in education. On the other hand, smart tools can make learning more fun and effective. But they can also make students more lazy or likely to copy, rather than think for themselves. It is crucial to educate students about the responsible and creative use of AI.

We explored gamification, which turns learning into a game with objectives and rewards, motivating students. We also talk about using authentic materials in language learning, such as television shows or popular music, that show real language use.

In terms of improving student writing, we discussed how AI can generate ideas, correct errors, and find reliable sources for academic papers. It is important that students use these tools intelligently, without depending on them too much.

We discussed how to create lesson plans with guided activities to develop skills such as writing, speaking, reading, or listening with the help of AI, implementing various specialized tools and applications.

Finally, we address the importance of developing educational bots to help students practice and get quick information on specific topics. These resources are essential to improve the learning process and facilitate access to information efficiently.

These concepts challenged my previous understanding of English language learning due to the large number of terms that I was completely unaware of or had understood incorrectly. For example, when "authentic material" was mentioned, I initially thought it referred to resources specifically designed for language teaching. However, I discovered that it is exactly the opposite: it refers to any material that is not designed for direct educational purposes, such as songs, television shows, or everyday conversations. This concept was totally new to me and represented a significant challenge. Now I clearly understand its meaning and how we can take advantage of it to improve language learning.

Another concept that surprised me was "gamification". Initially, I thought it was just about playing games to make learning more entertaining. However, I learned that gamification involves using game elements to motivate and reward learning, with specific goals and clear benefits at the end of the process. This new understanding made me think about how I perceived the use of games in learning and how they can be effective tools when applied correctly.

I plan to apply the concepts learned in this module in several ways in my future teaching. My perspective on how to teach has changed, and I believe it is essential to take advantage of all the tools available today. Artificial intelligence is transforming education, and we must adapt and learn to use it responsibly to obtain the best results.

During this module, I discovered many applications and platforms that will be very useful:

Elsa Speak and Emma: I will use these applications in my classes so that students practice their speaking and pronunciation. I can ask them to use them to prepare before a presentation or interview, which not only improves their skills but also motivates them to practice more at home.

Brisk: This app is great for creating lesson plans on specific topics. I can ask Brisk to generate a plan about the present perfect, review it, and make any necessary adjustments. Additionally, Brisk allows me to create presentations and leave writing activities for my students, giving them personalized feedback.

Eduaide and Magic School: These tools help me design lesson plans and interactive activities, combining them to make my classes more interesting and effective.

Heygen: With this tool, I can create avatars or videos about specific topics, such as climate change, and then discuss questions related to the video with my students. This captures their attention and makes learning more engaging.

Thanks to all the tools I learned to use in this module, I can create dynamic and fun activities that will facilitate learning and motivate students to actively participate in their education. These tools will allow me to make my classes more interactive, attractive and effective, ensuring better learning for my students.

Conclusion and key learnings

The knowledge gained in this module will significantly influence my teaching methods. AI and its tools have strengthened my way of teaching. I will implement learning techniques and integrate technological tools to facilitate interactive learning. With the knowledge acquired, I will be able to design more effective classes, use clear rubrics to evaluate assignments, and adapt my teaching to the needs of my students, promoting an environment of continuous improvement.

A specific activity where I can apply what I have learned is to create a lesson plan using tools like Copilot or Chat GPT. I can also integrate activities using the Elsa Speak app for students to practice their pronunciation before an oral assessment. For example, I would ask them to practice certain questions with this app to gain confidence.

Another activity is to use the Brisk tool to assign writing activities and provide immediate feedback. For example, I can ask my students to write a journal of at least 200 words about their vacation and use Brisk to give detailed feedback.

In conclusion, the implementation of these technological tools will allow me to design more effective and attractive classes, improving interaction, personalization and student motivation, and making the most of the educational resources available in the digital age.

Incorporation of content created with AI

This module allowed me to create a variety of content with AI, such as presentations, songs, avatars, videos, lesson plans, and comics. Using Suno, I created a song about prepositions to facilitate my students' learning. With Diffit, I prepared a presentation on Nayib Bukele's security policies, capturing students' attention with authentic and relevant material. Also with the help of Heygen I created a video about the rains and I really liked the result.

Additionally, I created a comic with AI-comic-factory to demonstrate how my students could present themselves. I assigned assignments using apps like ChatterPix Kids to have students present themselves creatively. Tools like Elsa Speak and Emma helped improve speaking, while Free Text-to-Speech and Murf AI improved listening.

These apps allow students to practice specific skills and receive immediate feedback, improving their learning and motivation. With this knowledge, I will be able to create more dynamic and effective lessons, adapted to the individual needs of the students, promoting a more motivating and efficient educational environment.

Also, I had the opportunity to participate in the creation of an educational bot. This was one of the best experiences I had throughout the course. Together with my colleagues, using poe.com, we created a specific bot for the subject of English A1 for high school. We provided the proper instructions and gathered all the necessary information to feed and test the bot. Honestly, I liked the results obtained. It was a wonderful idea since with the creation of this bot we will be able to help many students regarding topics that they sometimes do not understand quickly.

In addition to having acquired all the knowledge mentioned above, I also had the opportunity to obtain several certifications. These certifications have given me a deep understanding of crucial topics in teaching, and I am excited to apply this advanced knowledge in my teaching practice.

 Artificial Intelligence and Design Thinking

1. Introduction

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog! In this space, we are going to explore interesting topics that are on everyone's lips nowadays. As you know, the world is constantly changing, and today we are going to delve into a topic that is causing a stir globally and, obviously, is having a huge impact on society.

In this blog, we will explore important aspects of artificial intelligence and design thinking, and how these are radically transforming our lives. Artificial intelligence has evolved considerably over time, becoming a versatile and powerful tool in various fields, from education to innovation in design. It is essential to understand its definition and utility, but also to reflect on how it can influence our lives and how we can use it responsibly.

On the other hand, design thinking represents a creative and user-centered approach to problem-solving. It is based on deeply understanding the needs and desires of the people involved to develop innovative and effective solutions.

Initially, my focus in this module was on understanding the functioning and utility of artificial intelligence. However, as I delved deeper into the topic, I realized the urgent need not only to understand its importance but also to consider how it can impact our lives and how we can employ it ethically and responsibly. It is essential to address all these facets to effectively harness its potential wisely.

In this space, I will also share my personal experience with some artificial intelligence tools that I have had the opportunity to work with, showcasing the results obtained. Additionally, I will explain in detail the methodology behind design thinking, highlighting how it can help us create more effective and people-centered solutions. Both topics are fascinating and offer us opportunities for continuous learning. Keeping ourselves updated in a constantly changing world is fundamental, as technology advances rapidly and offers us new possibilities. It only requires practice, study, and exploration to discover the incredible things we can achieve with these tools.

2. Development (Reflection on Key Concepts)

During this module, I have gained a profound understanding of key concepts related to artificial intelligence (AI) and its application across various domains. We delved into what AI is, how it operates, and its significance in both technological projects and educational processes. For example, I learned about the concept of a "prompt", comprehending its elements and distinguishing between prompt design and prompt engineering. Additionally, I grasped the notion of generative artificial intelligence and its capacity to create original content in various forms, such as visual, written, or auditory.

Among the fundamental concepts addressed were large language models, tools that enable us to comprehend and manipulate human language in different contexts. Moreover, I learned about prompt design, involving the creation of specific instructions to elicit desired responses from a language model, and prompt engineering, which aims to optimize the performance of these models across various applications.

Furthermore, I explored the use of instructions for categorizing text into specific classes, as well as the importance of identifying and mitigating hallucinations in artificial intelligence systems to enhance their reliability and accuracy.

Besides, I delved into the concept of "Design Thinking", a human-centered methodology for addressing complex problems and devising innovative solutions. Throughout the stages of empathizing, defining, ideating, prototyping, and testing, I learned to understand users' needs and contexts, define problems clearly, generate creative ideas, build prototypes, and evaluate their effectiveness with real users.

Moreover, these concepts challenged my understanding of teaching the English language in various aspects. Before becoming familiar with them, my educational focus primarily revolved around grammar and vocabulary. However, delving into artificial intelligence and design thinking made me realize the wide range of advanced technological tools available to enhance our teaching methodology and increase student motivation.

Personally, the concept of prompt presented a significant challenge for me. Initially, I encountered difficulties in designing the precise instructions necessary to obtain the desired responses from language models. In my early attempts, I often became frustrated when I failed to achieve the expected results, even after trying various alternatives. However, this prompted me to thoroughly review the underlying concepts and gain a deeper understanding of how prompts function.

With time and persistent practice, I was able to improve in this aspect. I learned to discern the essential elements of an effective prompt and adjust my approaches accordingly. I discovered the importance of clarity in instructions and precision in prompt formulation to obtain relevant and useful responses. This process not only strengthened my technical skills in prompt design but also provided me with a greater understanding of the interaction between human language and artificial intelligence technologies. Ultimately, my experience with prompts was not only a challenge but also an opportunity for growth and learning.

Design thinking also proved to be a challenge for me. Learning about each of its stages and then applying them in real-life situations with real problems was a considerable challenge. However, this method excited me as it allowed me to understand the individual needs of my students and create innovative solutions using the English language as a tool. For example, in the empathizing stage, we have to immerse ourselves in the student's experience to understand their needs, preferences, and specific challenges when learning English. This may involve conducting interviews, surveys, or even direct observations in the classroom to capture their perspectives deeply.

Then, in the defining stage, we must clearly identify the problems and challenges that students face when learning English. This can range from difficulties with pronunciation to reading comprehension problems or lack of motivation. In the ideation stage, we must generate creative ideas to address the identified problems. For example, this could involve designing more dynamic and participatory learning activities, using multimedia resources, or implementing personalized learning programs tailored to the individual needs of each student. Subsequently, in the prototyping stage, I faced the challenge of creating preliminary versions of the proposed solutions to test their viability and effectiveness. This could involve creating prototypes of classroom activities, teaching materials, or even software programs specifically designed to improve English language learning. Finally, in the testing stage, I committed to evaluating and refining the prototyped solutions. This involves gathering feedback, making adjustments as necessary, and ensuring that the implemented solutions truly meet the needs and expectations of the students.

In summary, in my future English teaching, I plan to apply the design thinking approach more often to develop innovative solutions that address the specific challenges of my students. By integrating artificial intelligence (AI) tools into this process, such as virtual tutoring systems or adaptive learning platforms, I will be able to offer more personalized and effective learning experiences. For example, I could use AI chatbots to provide instant feedback to students on their pronunciation or grammar comprehension, or use machine learning algorithms to adapt course content to the individual needs of each student. Ultimately, this will allow me to adapt my teaching to the unique needs and abilities of my students, promoting more meaningful and authentic learning of the English language.

3. Conclusion and key learnings

In summary, both artificial intelligence and design thinking are changing our world in surprising ways. Artificial intelligence can perform tasks that were previously exclusive to humans, meaning it can increase our productivity, enhance decision-making, and solve complex problems on an entirely new scale.

To make the most of this combination, it's important to follow certain recommendations. Firstly, it is crucial to understand the needs and desires of users before applying any AI-based solutions. This involves thorough research and user testing to ensure that proposed solutions truly add value and enhance user experience.

Furthermore, it is essential to consider the ethical and social implications of artificial intelligence. It is important to ensure that developed solutions are fair, transparent, and respectful of user privacy.

In conclusion, artificial intelligence and design thinking have the potential to drive innovation and improve people's quality of life. By effectively integrating these two approaches, we can create solutions that are more efficient, relevant, and focused on human needs.

In the educational realm, the knowledge gained in this module will influence my teaching approach. One of the main influences will be the integration of interdisciplinary approaches that combine AI and design thinking. This will be reflected in the creation of activities and projects that foster collaboration between different areas of study, such as computer science and design. For example, we could develop a project where students apply design thinking to devise innovative solutions and also create creative solutions using AI.    Ultimately, the knowledge acquired will broaden my pedagogical approach, allowing me to effectively integrate AI and design thinking concepts into my teaching methods and activities designed to engage students in the practical application of these principles.

4. Incorporation of content created with AI

In this section, I want to share the content I have created using AI. It is important to highlight that AI is a tool that helps us enhance and make our work or tasks more creative in any field. As educators, we can create a variety of materials for our classes using AI. For example, to create presentations, we can employ tools like Gamma, GPT, Power point designer, Copilot, Microsoft 365, Canva, among others. The use of these tools allows us to save time and make our classes more dynamic and enjoyable.

Personally, I want to highlight Gamma because I consider it a very useful tool. If you need to create a presentation on any topic and you do not have clear ideas on how to organize the content or if you lack time to do it, Gamma is an excellent option to guide you. However, it is crucial to remember that we should review all the content generated by this tool in the end to avoid errors in our presentations. Moreover, it is essential to highlight the numerous options that artificial intelligence (AI) provides for creating presentations. For instance, we can utilize tools like Copilot, which generate code based on prompts. Once the code is generated, we simply copy and paste it into Microsoft PowerPoint after making certain adjustments. Instantaneously, we obtain slides ready for editing, allowing us to personalize them with various formats, images, and any other elements we wish to include.

Next, I will show you one of the presentations I created using Gamma combined with Nearpod. I chose the topic of the simple present and used appropriate prompts for Gamma to generate a presentation on this topic. https://gamma.app/docs/4wk40lyfd1jfjc6 After reviewing all the information generated by the platform, I selected the parts that best suited my needs and downloaded the presentation in PDF format. To make it more engaging, I used Nearpod, where I added videos, quizzes, and other activities to make my class more creative.
